Ku-ring-gai, New South Wales

A TALENTED group of young people from Ku-ring-gai has produced a hip-hop song to promote World Suicide Prevention Day on Friday.

Each year in Australia more than 55,000 people attempt suicide and about 2200 people succeed.

Ku-ring-gai Council youth services officer Jenna Bloom said the song was created to encourage those who were struggling to reach out for help.

The song, Brighter Days, was written by Daniel Wright, Noah Gorrick and Rowan Bosman under the name of Poz, short for Positive.

It tackles the issues of negative thinking, depression and suicide, while delivering a message of hope and support.

"The three young men who wrote and recorded this song have shared their personal experiences to create a truly powerful and creative piece," Ms Bloom said.

The council is hoping to have the song played on as many Sydney radio stations as possible on Friday.

Brighter Days will be available to download from www.kmc.nsw.gov.au/youth from September 10. Need someone to talk to? Contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Kids Help Line on 1800 555 1800.

World Suicide Prevention Day is an international day in which the International Association for Suicide Prevention aims to reduce the stigma of suicide and promote help seeking. Help seeking is the act of willingly seeking to consult with doctors, councillors and trained professionals.

This year, Suicide Prevention Australia will be providing a open Community Forum in which the community are invited to attend and partake in a discussion with industry experts such as Jaelea Skehan (Acting Director) of Mindframe, Atari Metcalf (Youth Project Manager) of Inspire Foundation, Susan Beaton (National Advisor on Suicide Prevention) of Lifeline Australia and John Allen (NSW Health Chief Psychiatrist).

This year's forum topics are 'Encouraging Help Seeking' and 'Stigma Reduction'. Media and every day Australians are welcome to attend - this event is being held at the Museum of Contemporary Arts with the first forum beginning at 3:30pm.

Closing the World Suicide Prevention Day activities in Sydney are the LIFE Awards, an event held annually to recognise those achieving excellence in the field of suicide prevention across 9 categories. In 2010 the LIFE Awards are to be held on September 11th and this year the ceremony will take place at Utzon Room at the Sydney Opera House. This is an invite only event but media are welcome to attend (please RSVP to Brendan@wpsd.org.au).

MANY FACES, MANY PLACES: SUICIDE PREVENTION ACROSS THE WORLD is the theme for this year's World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September.

This theme is very appropriate for the Gold Coast in particular, as we welcome many new faces, from many places, to the region each year.

The FREE Information Forum is for all community members and is aimed at increasing awareness of issues relating to suicide and suicide prevention.

Education is the key to decreasing the numbers of suicides and together we can make a difference.

Presentations will cover a range of topics to increase your awareness of suicide prevention strategies and information on local services and how to access.

Canada

Every September 10th people and communities across Canada and throughout the world come together to show their support for suicide prevention and for those whose lives have been affected by suicide. Suicide is preventable and requires every person's participation. Any one of us could play a part in helping to save a life. This year, the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) has chosen as its World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) theme, "What do you know, What Do you need to know? What you know could save a life." During World Suicide Prevention week, CASP, in partnership with "Living Works," is urging all Canadians to take time to learn about suicide, the warning signs and what to do.

CASP is encouraging all communities to organize events that; commemorate World Suicide Prevention Day, remember those who have died by suicide, support those who grieve, reduce stigma and draw attention to this important public health issue. In order to assist communities with their WSPD activities CASP has prepared posters that can be adapted to reflect the activities and events you have planned. CASP has also developed suicide awareness resource material that can be downloaded from our website or ordered and shipped to you. Space has been left on this material so that your community can include information pertaining to local resources such as crisis/distress lines. This material includes; a post card size handout that reviews warning signs and what to do and also a pamphlet for service organizations on how to be suicide safer and support suicide prevention. CASP will also prepare sample press releases and letters to the editor for you to use and adapt for your purposes. These will also be available on CASP's website.

CASP is pleased to have Living Works as a partner in this year's World Suicide Prevention Day and to inform you that Living Works is offering a special incentive for this year's WSPD. For information on this Living Works offer please visit their new website at www.livingworks.net.

CASP in partnership with survivor groups has produced a special pin that commemorates suicide prevention, suicide loss, the strength and resilience of survivors and hope. These pins, which blend the CASP logo with that of a ribbon, are available for purchase through CASP and can be used by community groups to promote suicide awareness in their community and for fundraising. PINS can be purchased for $2.50 each.

CASP has once again used the image of a Kite to commemorate WSPD. The image of a kite is rich with symbolism and meaning. A Kite can represent those who have died by suicide and our connection to them, our ability to heal and hope. This message of hope is central to our message and all that we do.

We are also urging all Canadians to continue their efforts to impress upon our Members of Parliament and the Government of Canada to move forward on a national suicide prevention strategy. In spite of the recommendation of both the WHO and U.N., Canada remains one of the few industrialized and G 8 countries that still has no national suicide prevention strategy. You can demonstrate your support for a national strategy by calling or writing your MP, signing CASP's e-petition at http://nspscnd.epetitions.net or mail in a postcard to the Minister of Health. Postcards can be downloaded from the CASP website or ordered through our national office casp@casp-acps.ca.

Also on September 10th, CASP will officially launch its new website and we invite you to visit us again and take a look at our new format. We welcome your feedback and suggestions.

On behalf of CASP's Board of Directors we would like to express our gratitude for all your support and wish you all the best for your WSPD activities. We would also like to invite you to become a member of CASP if you are not one already. CASP receives no public funding and relies entirely on membership fees and donations.

Sincerely,

Tim Wall, Executive Director CASP; Marion Cooper, President; Joan Seabrook, Vice President

Grande Prairie, Alberta

I work for Suicide Prevention Resource Centre, non-profit Community Agency located in Grande Prairie, Alberta Canada. I am Public Education Coordinator. One of my roles revolves around awareness and therefore we always try and do something around September 10th every year. Our Vision is "Working Together to Eliminate Suicide" and so we try and involve other organizations whenever possible and have found that if we are approached with an idea and asked for support, we have a far more successful event than if we do the approaching!

We have three events taking place. First, we will be having a small dedication ceremony with dignitaries, partners and supporters, media, and perhaps some "Survivors" at hill in our city that has for generations been used unofficially as a winter sliding hill and known as "Suicide Hill" due to the dangerous aspect of the ride. Approached by concerned survivors regarding the name of the hill, we worked to have the city recognise the hill officially and give it a name chosen by the public. A sign is now in place for "Swanavon Thrill Hill". This will be dedicated officially on September 10th.

Second, we were approached by a church youth group leader with an idea and resources for a free "movie night" event for youth. As youth are known to be a high risk group for suicide and also as less than 2% seek help from professionals but usually go to friends for help, we want to reach as many youth as possible with the message of how to save a life. The movie is called "To Save A Life"

We were asked to contribute to this event. We are planning to have it shown in an outdoor venue at a city park amphitheater. Followed by information on local programs for youth and training they can take to help them save a life. We hope this will generate awareness, compassion and understanding, motivation to be proactive in suicide prevention, and an increased understanding of resources and supports.

Our Third event is a fundraising event the following night with help again from members of the communities we serve.

We are proud to have established a network of agencies, organisations, businesses and individuals who are dedicated to helping us with our vision of eliminating suicide.

Vancouver Island, British Columbia

In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day 2010, The Central Vancouver Island Crisis Society is hosting its fifth annual community gathering for those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Soles Remembering Souls is a unique, free of charge, gathering open to anyone who has lost someone they loved or cared about to suicide as well as to community members who would like to lend their support.

All who attend will be warmly greeted by fellow Survivors of Suicide who understand the pain and isolation that suicide grief can bring. Prior to the program in the theatre, guests are invited to acknowledge their loved one by contributing to our memory and healing wall.

This might include bringing a picture to share, a poem, a quote, or anything else that has meaning or significance for you. There will be art tables set up for people wanting to personalize their pictures and messages before adding them to the wall. Each year that we gather together, we will watch the wall grow along with our hopes and connections to one another.

Invited guests include agencies that specialize in bereavement support like Hospice, Rainbows, and the Suicide Bereavement Support Group. Support people and booths will be set up for information or a compassionate listening ear. Our intention is to help anyone who has lost someone they love to suicide feel less alone.

It can also be healing and impactful to acknowledge our loss by making a real difference to someone else. Guests are invited to bring a pair of new or gently used shoes in memory of the loved one you lost to suicide. All shoes will be donated to those in need as a reminder that none of us ever has to walk alone.

The program in the theatre begins with the placing of the shoes. Highlights include music, a multi-media video presentation, words of comfort, hope, and healing from fellow survivors of suicide loss and a "letting go" bubble blowing ceremony outside the theatre at the end.

Our hope is that those who attend will leave with the belief that love never dies and through this sense of compassion will walk away with a renewed sense that life can and will go on.

The Crisis Society is also hosting a three hour "by donation" workshop: Suicide Awareness and Response on September 10th.

If you would like more information about the event, the workshop, or wish to have a photograph of a loved one included as a part of a photo retrospective, please call Lyndsay @ 250-753-2495 or email a photograph to lyndsay@cvics.ca.

Join us in this World Wide Awareness Campaign aimed at preventing the tragedy of suicide and supporting those who have been left behind.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

New Brochure to Help Families After a Suicide Attempt

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada- September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). It is a day where communities across Canada and throughout the world come together to show their support for suicide prevention efforts and for those whose lives have been affected by suicide.

The Canadian Mental Health Association/PEI Division is marking this day by launching a new brochure designed for family and friends who have experienced the suicide attempt of a loved one. Entitled, "After a Suicide Attempt...What Next?", the brochure answers some of the many questions that loved ones have after a suicide attempt and offers helpful information about how to reduce the risk of it happening again.

Research has shown that one of the strongest risk factors for suicide is a previous suicide attempt. Those who have attempted suicide are 40 times more likely to die by suicide than someone who has never made a suicide attempt and they seem to be particularly vulnerable in the weeks and months following an attempt. Providing families and friends with practical information can help to reduce the level of risk and could potentially save a life.

CMHA's Suicide Prevention Coordinator, Pat Doyle, says, "This brochure will be invaluable to loved ones who are perhaps leaving hospital and going home with someone who has just made a suicide attempt." She goes on to say, "It is a very unsettling time for families so we hope to give them some direction as to what they can do to support their loved one, how they can reduce the risks at home and where to turn for help, should there be future concern or suicidal crisis."

John MacMillan, Clinical Therapist with Community Mental Health, provided a clinical review of the brochure's content. He says, "We need to arm families with the information they need to help keep their loved ones safe. They need to know what warning signs to look for and where to get support for both the person at risk and those who have been impacted by suicide behavior."

CMHA's President, John Horrelt, commends the Committee for addressing this particular area of need, saying, "This resource will increase Islanders' capacity to better cope with the challenges they face and will compliment CMHA's existing suicide prevention efforts.

The brochures will be distributed to Island hospitals, Community Mental Health Centres and related support agencies in early September, to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day. To request additional copies, please contact CMHA's Suicide Prevention Coordinator at 628-3669 or suicideprevention@cmha.pe.ca. The Hidden Face of Suicide Trailer 2010-07-23 from Yehudit Silverman on Vimeo.

Yehudit Silverman's award winning documentary enters the world of survivors, those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Silverman, a professor in the Department of Creative Arts Therapy at Concordia University combines her artistic and therapeutic skills to create an evocative documentary to raise awareness about suicide. At seventeen, Silverman learned by accident that her uncle, who died before she was born, had taken his own life yet no one had ever spoken about it. Looking for the story behind her parents' silence, Silverman sets out on a journey of understanding and transformation. Meeting with members from the Montreal group Family Survivors of Suicide, Silverman helps them find a unique way of expressing the unspeakable. With respect and compassion, the film tells their remarkable stories of healing.

The Hidden Face of Suicide is a heartfelt and original look at suicide that brings to light the terrible cost of silence. The film has been selected at five international film festivals and won an award for "Best North American Documentary under 60 minutes" at the Heart of England International Film festival. So far the film has created a strong international response and following. The local screening of this Montreal based production will be an important event raising awareness about the still taboo subject of suicide. The director and the survivors in the film will be present at the screenings.

Hong Kong, China

Suicide prevention is always one of the major public health concerns in the community. In 2003, 1,264 people (18.6 per 100,000 people) lost their precious lives by committing suicide. Since then, the suicide rate dropped to 14.0 per 100,000 in 2008. However, we shall expect a reduction of 13.5 to level off the global average.

September 10, 2010 is the World Suicide Prevention Day. The theme this year "Many Faces, Many Places: Suicide Prevention across the World" spotlights the diverse suicide prevention strategies from different nations. In Hong Kong, the Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP) will hold a seminar to remind the importance of suicide prevention. As one of the pioneers of suicide prevention, we believe that knowledge exchange would benefit the society from deliberate self-harm and it is also one of the best effective ways to make a difference.

In September 6, the CSRP is delighted to invite Dr. Konrad Michel, Senior Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist of the University Psychiatric Hospital in Switzerland, to share with us his clinical experiences on suicide prevention in the seminar named "Follow-up of Suicide Attempters - The Role of the Therapeutic Alliance". The seminar will begin at 4.00pm at the University of Hong Kong.

Copenhagen

The Danish suicide prevention organization Livslinien will focus on how important it is to show concern for each other, engage in the difficult conversation and bring the taboo of suicidal thoughts into public.

Using the slogan 'Say It - I'm listening,' volunteer counselors will hand out flyers with good advices on how to take care of yourself and others.

The setting will be at 'Rådhuspladsen', the city hall square in Copenhagen. Here we will offer people a cup of coffee and a talk in domestic surroundings. By bringing a living room, kitchen table and chairs we aim to create an everyday environment that shows talking about difficulties in life does not necessarily has to happen in hospitals, but can be done at home with families and friends.

Thereby we wish to encourage people to take action when worried about the wellbeing of themselves and others.

For further information see our webpage at:www.livslinien.dk.

World Suicide Prevention Day takes place around the world this year on Friday September 10, and its message wil be that people should think about their mental health and seek help if necessary.

The group Suicide or Survive (SOS) is to send personalised postcards to all members of the Oireachtas highlighting the suicide issue in advance of the day.

CEO of SOS Caroline McGuigan said the World Health Organization estimates that around one million people die by suicide each year - one death every forty seconds worldwide.

"Suicide rates are on the increase in many developed countries around the world including Ireland. World Suicide Prevention Day is a day to stop, look around and consider our mental health, to accept that maybe the feelings we have of being unable to cope or of losing our sense of hope and direction might actually be related to the onset of depression," she said.

She said no matter how dark the situation may seem there is support available.

Liveline's Joe Duffy said the difficult economic climate of the past two years has put enormous pressure on everyone and unfortunately some people find it more difficult to cope than others.

He said the work that organisaitons such as SOS do is increasingly important in Ireland today and he would encourage people to stop and think about their mental health and when necessary, seek help.

Understanding Families and Suicide Risk: Implications for suicide prevention practice

John Fitzgerald (Director/Consultant Clinical Psychologist, The Psychology Centre)
By interviewing families with experience of suicidal behaviour, and practitioners who work closely with families at risk, John Fitzgerald was able to delve into what family resilience means and investigate how a family’s strength can assist in situations when a young person is at risk.

Feasibility of comparing dialectical behaviour therapy with treatment as usual for suicidal and self-injuring adolescents: the treatment phase of a small randomized controlled trial

Dr. Emily Cooney, Dr. Kirsten Davis, Ms. Pania Thompson, Ms. Julie Wharewera-Mika (all from Kari Centre, ADHB) and Ms. Joanna Stewart (University of Auckland)
By randomly assigning 29 adolescents, who in the previous three months had a suicide attempt or history of self-injury, either uncontrolled treatment or six months of dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) this research assessed whether DBT was acceptable to New Zealand adolescents, families and clinicians.

Philippines

World Suicide Prevention Day will be marked on Sept. 10 with the theme "Many Faces, Many Places: Suicide Prevention Across the World" to underscore the importance of an international effort to prevent suicides.

Although there are significant differences in the profiles of suicidal individuals in different parts of the globe, a common thread and risk factors are indicated in most completed suicide attempts, the Natasha Goulbourn Foundation (NGF) said in a press statement.

The NGF with support from the Department of Health (DoH) is launching for the first time in the Philippines a series of activities to heighten awareness about suicide prevention.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 3,000 people commit suicide around the globe daily, or one every 40 seconds. For every suicide, 20 or more may have attempted to end their lives, it said.

In the Philippines, the DoH has reported that about five people take their own lives each day, with the 20-24 age group having the highest suicide rate.

Suicide is a major cause of premature death influenced by psychosocial, cultural and environmental risk factors that can be prevented through responses that address the risk factors.

Suicides are underreported to avoid socio-cultural stigma, evade police investigations and legal harassment, and collect insurance. Suicides are also misclassified as accidents, thus official numbers are gross underestimates.

There is strong evidence to indicate that adequate responses can reduce suicide rates, the NGF said in its statement.

World Suicide Prevention Day was started in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) with support from the WHO.

World Suicide Prevention Day aims to raise awareness that suicide is preventable; improve the education about suicide; and decrease the stigma and debunk the myths surrounding the act.

The WHO and IASP work with governments and other partners to ensure that suicide is no longer stigmatized, criminalized or penalized.

More than a hundred: students; teachers; representatives of the Suicidological Centre of Moscow Scientific and Research Institute of Psychiatry of the Russian Ministry of Public Health, headed by Professor E.B. Lyubov, Chief Suicidologist; and representatives of the Crisis Department of the Skliphosovsky Emergency Aid Institute.

Professor L.V. Kuznetsova, Chief of Special and Clinical Psychology Chair opened the meeting with a presentation on handicapped people as a group at risk and how art is used to escape crisis.

Ms. L.S. Arkhangelskaya, Chair Dean, the IASP National Representative, read an address by Dr. Lanny Berman, President of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP). His address stressed the extreme relevancy of World Suicide Prevention Day and activities being held throughout the world. Berman's message notes that according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the organization that co-sponsors World Suicide Prevention Day, that suicide is ranked high in mortality factors and that more than a million die annually to sucide and that every 40 seconds suicide kills someone, somewhere in the world.

Dr. Berman also wrote that while we cannot totally stop suicide, it can be reduced through our efforts, especially when we are united in our efforts. Therefore, research and the united together of psychologists, suicidologists, medical professionals is a top objective.

The meeting continued with many interesting reports made by university teachers and suicidologists. These reports indicate that the communications and scientific and research teamwork have begun to take shape in the course wirk of the present seminar Social Risk groups, and also in terms of preventative measures and the formation of anti-suicide protective barriers.

This year, the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Since 1 December 1969, SOS has been attending to people in distress, feeling suicidal or affected by suicide.

As part of its anniversary celebrations and in conjunction with the World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September 2010, SOS is organising a Two-day conference on 8 and 9 September 2010. Titled: Listening, Caring and Supporting.

It is our honour to have Professor Graham Martin from Australia as the keynote speaker for the conference, as well as other distinguished local speakers, who will be sharing on what works for suicide prevention and post-vention.

There will also be a panel discussion on the approach the community should take towards suicide prevention. There will be concurrent workshops on the actual conference day, and a pre-conference workshop - with topics tailored for teachers and youth workers.

This year's World Suicide Prevention Day activities are aimed towards the Media in order to raise awareness about the importance of responsible reporting on suicide. We have translated and edited the WHO / IASP Media Guidelines, using suggestions from journalists and editors with whom we collaborated. We added a few chapters. We plan to dissemminate the final version of the Slovenian Media Guideliness after Sept 10th.

On the World Suicide Prevention Day itself, we plan a cultural event entitled, "The Image of Suicide in the Public," where we will launch the Guidelines officially. Eminent guests from the Health sector (Minister of Health), Media and Advertising fields, Suicidology, and other related disciplines, will give speeches and lectures on the topic. The event will be closed by a destigmatizing theather play called "The Tunnel". The whole event will be open to the general public.

The event and this year's World Suicide Prevention Day activities are held through the collaborative efforts of the Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia, OZARA Slovenia - organizations that help people with mental disorders, and the Slovenian Association for Suicide Prevention and the Universitiy of Primorska.

The World Health Organization and colleagues emphasize that despite the significant increase in suicide rates in different countries, many cases can be prevented, stressing the importance of:

Stating that the success of suicide prevention approaches are in restricting access to methods of suicide (analgesics, gases, pesticides, firearms, etc.), establishing community-based prevention programs, establishing guidelines for the media, and the collaboration between frontline professionals through training programs.

Therefore, the issues we address are: data for suicide both at international and national profiles and circumstances of suicides in different parts of the world, the treatment of suicide by the media and suicide in everyday life and aid strategies.

The Suicide Liaison Service is being launched to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day on Friday.

It will involve psychological therapists providing information, support and guidance via the telephone or in person to those hit by suicide.

According to NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, about 60 people in the region take their own lives each year.

Yvonne Elder, suicide liaison worker, said: "Bereavement by suicide can be particularly painful to cope with and many people who experience this type of loss find it hard to access the practical help and support they need.

"We will be available to help people deal with things such as investigations and sorting out of personal affairs, as well as liaising with the coroner's office and the police."

Belfast, Northern Ireland

The Suicide Awareness and Support Group have helped organise a 'Walk out of Darkness' on World Suicide Prevention Day for the previous three years. This year, we are involved in a regional approach where we envisage that individuals, community, statutory and voluntary groups will come from across Northern Ireland to join in our annual 'Walk out of Darkness,' and support the ethos of World Suicide Prevention Day.

Our Walk this year covers five various routes, where those bereaved and their supporters will walk out of the darkness and into the dawn of World Suicide Prevention Day. All five processions will leave their various destinations at 4.15am and walk collectively until they reach Belfast City Hall.

Everyone assembles at the City Hall, and we host a beautiful service of reflection for those bereaved by suicide as the dawn is breaking. Then we move on to keynote speeches by our Health Minister and our Lord Mayor, regarding suicide prevention.

We invite everyone for breakfast. This enables those gathered to share their experiences of the Walk on September 10th, World Suicide Prevention Day.

Scotland

Every year Scotland joins countries all over the world to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. In Scotland this has been extended to a week of activities known as Suicide Prevention Week.

Choose Life is Scotland's suicide prevention strategy, set up in 2002 to reduce the nation's suicide rate. Every day around two people take their own lives in Scotland, and it's the biggest killer of young people. Last year, 746 people died from suicide. Encouragingly Scotland's suicide rate has come down by 11% since Choose Life launched, but every life lost to suicide is a tragedy, and shows how vital the work of Choose Life is.

A key aim of Choose Life is to create greater public awareness and understanding of suicide, and encourage people with suicidal thoughts to talk about how they feel and why they have come to feel this way. But the stigma that surrounds suicide makes it difficult for some people to talk about it, which is a barrier to getting help. Suicide Prevention Week (6-12 September) is an opportunity to show that serious and responsible talk about suicide can help people at risk feel more comfortable about asking for the help they need.

To do this, Choose Life delivers a national awareness-raising campaign, 'Suicide. Don't hide it. Talk about it.' every Suicide Prevention Week. TV, radio, online advertising, events and PR have all been used to spread the message across Scotland that if you're feeling suicidal, talking helps, and encourage people at risk to talk to someone they trust, or call the professional listening helplines Breathing Space or Samaritans. This year, it aims to reach people mainly when they're alone and at their most vulnerable, with powerful radio advertising in the evening and later and night, and online advertising to reach people who may be using the Internet as a replacement for social interaction. Online pre-rolls of the TV advert before video clips on sports, film and entertainment websites will give people further opportunities to see the hard-hitting ad that was first broadcast in Scotland in April 2010.

Locally, areas across Scotland have tailored suicide prevention action plans, and raising awareness of suicide prevention and providing support to those bereaved by suicide by are key activities, especially at this time each year. Examples of what Scotland is doing locally to mark the week are:

On behalf of the members of the National Council for Suicide Prevention (NCSP), I am pleased to share with you our efforts to recognize World Suicide Prevention Day 2010. Many of you know that WSPD is September 10th this year and many of you are part of or are coordinating activities in your communities which is great! To support that work and the International Association for Suicide Prevention's world suicide prevention day, we have created a website and online event to encourage others to join the suicide prevention movement.

Our goal was to get people to "Take 5" to do something around suicide prevention: learn the warning signs, help a friend, share the message with 5 others, etc. We developed a logo (see below) that you can use on websites, in email blasts, on your Facebook pages, etc. This logo corresponds with the website www.Take5ToSaveLives.com which is now up and running. We hope you will find it engaging and easy to use, and that you will share this with others. To help support you doing this, we have created a one-page document explaining how to promote WSPD online. Below is a one-page informational sheet for organizations to use on how to spread the word and a one-page document that you can share with individuals giving them suggestions on how to take part in the online community and movement as well.

How You Can Help

Our hope is that you can begin to share this information within your organizations, add it to newsletters, etc. over the next 1-2 weeks, then increase your efforts to spread the message about WSP day the week of Sept. 6-10 and have included suggested Tweets and Posts to make it even easier for everyone to join in this virtual movement. We have also created a Facebook event, Facebook page and a Twitter feed which we support you adding to and watching. Together let's make this a top-trend on Twitter and have thousands join in on Facebook! For those of you connected to Plaxo, LinkedIn or other online networking sites, please add a comment about WSPD there too.

If your organization is not listed yet as a supporting organization and you want to be, please email me at dreidenberg@save.org. We will be updating that page over the next few weeks. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

With the help of six certified trainers, we are providing safeTALK, a LivingWorks suicide alert helper training, to over 200 individuals at four different locations in our county of 90,000 on September 10th in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day.

safeTALK is a two-and-a-half to three-hour training that prepares anyone over the age of 15 to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with thoughts of suicide invite help to stay safe. Alert helpers know how to use these opportunities to support that desire for safety. As a safeTALK-trained suicide alert helper, you will be better able to:

Powerful video clips illustrate both non-alert and alert responses. Discussion and practice help stimulate learning. Learn steps that contribute to saving lives.

The Role of safeTALK in a Suicide Safer Community

safeTALK was designed to teach skills that complement caregivers with suicide intervention skills like those learned in ASIST, LivingWorks\' two-day workshop. safeTALK-trained helpers make early recognition and referral possible on a far larger scale than any community can afford to do through suicide intervention skills training alone. When there are enough safeTALK-trained persons available, suicide intervention caregivers will be used more often.

Ohio

In Ohio, suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15- to 24-year-olds, and the second leading cause of death among college-age people.

Members of the Lake County Suicide Prevention Coalition> think those numbers are unacceptable and they're working to change them.

World Suicide Prevention Day is Friday, and the coalition is leveraging the global attention the event brings to the topic to help spread the word about their work locally.

The Suicide Prevention Coalition was started in 2005 by the Lake County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services board.

"Since day one, this coalition has represented a terrific investment for Lake County," said ADAMHS Executive Director Kim Fraser. "It's an energetic, collaborative and effective effort, and there's no question in my mind that lives have been saved because of the coalition's work. This is a great example of what can happen when local people work together to tackle a local issue."

The coalition's membership spans a wide range of area mental health and recovery service agencies, plus schools, law enforcement, hospitals and other community partners.

The group's roster also includes "suicide survivors," people who have lost a loved one to suicide.

The organizations's core goals are simple, said Coalition Coordinator Rae Grady.

"Our mission statement is just four little words: 'Prevent Tragedy. Heal Lives,' " she said. "We've put together a very solid presentation about suicide prevention, and we're trying to get that presentation in front of every group we can here in Lake County."

The coalition has presented to groups of between 10 and 1,000 people.

"We can't wait for our next opportunity to take our show on the road," Grady said.

The coalition's presentation gives audiences information on suicide warning signs and risk factors, dos and don'ts of suicide prevention, and emergency resources. It also stresses the connection between suicide and depressive illness. Presentations by the Suicide Prevention Coalition are free, and generally take 30 to 40 minutes, Grady said.

A presentation will be shown at noon Friday on The News-Herald's website, www.News-Herald.com, and will be followed by a live chat with presenters.

To schedule a presentation, call 440-255-1700 or send an e-mail to rgrady@crossroads-lake.org.

For more information about the ADAMHS board and the agency's network of service providers, visit www.helpthatworks.us or call 440-918-3117 or 440-350-3117.

Seattle, WA

On September 10th, in honor of World Suicide Prevention Day, my publisher, Big Think Media, and I are announcing the release of a newly published, two-volume book titled Passing Reflections. This book is a narrative of my journey of discovery over the first two years after losing my eldest son, Colby, to suicide.

My greatest hope is to introduce people to a path to peace, even in the midst of pain. This is my offering on World Suicide Prevention Day, hoping to help people learn how to navigate difficulty and alleviate suffering which can lead to suicide. Looking at the statistics one can see suicide has reached epidemic proportions. Still, silence shrouds the topic. I hope to open the door to a broader societal discussion of suicide.

I offer this work in support of the health and well-being of everyone: survivors of suicide as well as all who have ever contemplated suicide. I offer it in support of everyone who has wanted to help and felt shy about approaching a friend suffering loss. I offer it to the larger medical community that is sometimes unschooled about trauma's effect on survivors. I offer it to all who are willing to go deep enough to learn, like I did, that avoiding pain is not the way to find release from pain.

Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP) (www.yspp.org of Seattle, Washington, will receive a percentage of the profits from the sale of Passing Reflections. YSPP, under Sue Eastgard's leadership, has made a significant contribution to suicide prevention efforts in our greater Northwest community. Visit our website for more details: www.passingreflections.com.

September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. I encourage you to wear RED which is the colour of change, power and courage! Join our Viral Marketing Challenge on Facebook (under the Events Tab) & Twitter to share WSPD with 10,000 People through Social Media.

On Twitter you can post something like this:
"I am wearing RED on September 10th to support World Suicide Prevention Day"
"Help REDUCE the STIGMA around Suicide & Mental Illness - wear RED on September 10th."

You can also go to SimpLee Serene Twitter page and retweet any posts in reference to World Suicide Prevention Day. Together we have the Power to Change and Reduce the Stigma that surrounds Suicide and Mental Illness. The only way we will is by more and more people being educated, building awareness, and Acceptance!

Please visit the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) website and join them on Facebook and on Twitter and help Suicide Prevention.

In Alberta Suicide is the 2nd highest cause of death in our youth aged - 15 to 24! Isn't it about time we came together and stood tall in REDUCING THE STIGMA! Thank you to Sherri A. Scott for this information: Northern Alberta has the highest suicide rate in Canada.

In 2005 when my husband committed suicide there were two psychiatrists in Fort McMurray serving a population of approximately 70,000. I was featured on CBC in August 2005 talking about the fact that more medical support was needed, especially in Northern Alberta. More support followed...not sure what part I played in that..however I know if nothing else - I had the guts to speak up. This is unacceptable. I fully support your cause...and actively work towards helping you in any way that I can.

You don't have to go anywhere, give any money, or do anything - other than JUST WEAR RED!!! Share why you are wearing red with others and pass on this event to everyone you know.
