Listen to personal stories\, music and poetry\, creating a contemplative atmosphere.  You are invited to bring a small stone\, a flower or light a candle\, marking your own journey. \nJoin us as we come together for our first celebration in Leicester\, on Saturday\, 13th September at 2pm\, building on the success of a similar event hosted in London for the past 10 years. What we hope will become an annual event here in Leicester\, is a non-denominational service offering a compassionate space for those who are affected in any way by suicide and journeying towards hope and healing. DESCRIPTION:September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day and September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in Canada. \nSuicide is an issue impacting service users and community members throughout Nova Scotia and it disproportionately affects individuals from excluded and oppressed communities. At times\, addressing suicidality in service users and community can seem like a task too big and too risky for social workers and helpers. However\, it is important to understand that everyone can address suicide! At times the biomedical model and institutional silos can create barriers to supporting service users who are affected by suicidality. \nThis session explores the issues of suicidality beyond biomedical concepts and provides social workers and helpers with resources\, language\, and new understandings about suicidality based on emerging research and evidence. Questions explored in this session include: \n\nWhat are the underlying assumptions in suicide intervention and prevention?\n\n\nHow might social workers and helpers move beyond clinical and crisis-based approaches to suicide prevention?\n\n\nHow might social workers and helpers feel less fear and be empowered to address issues of suicide in their practice in clinical\, government\, and community settings?\nWhat are the resources\, frameworks\, and tools that exist to support community-based suicide prevention?\n\nThis session is in partnership with Nova Scotia Health’s community-based suicide prevention initiative\, Roots of Hope.

DESCRIPTION:The Castlemaine Safe Space\, a non-clinical free drop-in centre staffed by trained local Peer Volunteers\, will be holding a reflection and candle lighting ceremony at the Safe Space in Castlemaine from 7 – 8:30 pm on Wednesday September 10th at 74 Mostyn Street Castlemaine\, Victoria\, Australia. \nPlease come and join us\, or\, if you aren’t able to\, light a candle near a window at 8pm\nto show your support for suicide prevention\, to remember a lost loved one\nand to offer support for people struggling with the grief of suicide loss of a loved one. \nThe theme for this years event is Changing the Narrative on Suicide.  It’s about shifting from a culture of silence and lack of understanding to one of openness\, empathy\, and support. \nChanging the narrative means fostering empathy and compassion for those who are struggling. It means understanding that suicidal thoughts and feelings are a sign of immense pain and- distress\, and that talking about suicidal thoughts does not increase their presence or occurrence. It means listening without judgment\, offering support\, and guiding individuals towards help. \nFor us at the Castlemaine Safe Space\, we listen and provide warmth and support. We ask our guests what’s been happening for them\, and offer empathy stemming from our own lived experience\, something that often can’t happen in a hospital emergency room situation. \nWe recognise that thoughts about suicide are universal and normal. \nWe acknowledge all with a lived experience of suicide – those who have experienced suicidal thoughts\, made an attempt on their life\, cared for loved ones through crisis\, or been bereaved through suicide. \nWe remember those we have lost to suicide and acknowledge that you matter\, you always did\, and you always will. – you have left footprints on our hearts and minds forever. \n

We will light a candle for suicide survivors and hold a ceremony in their honor. This year\, for the first time\, to reinforce the change in narrative\, we will be accompanied by a group of Drums\, a popular musical art from our country (an Uruguayan Papageno). \nThe meeting will take place on September 10th at 6:30 pm. \nWe will also hold other activities. \nOn September 11th\, there will be an activity at the University of the Republic\, Faculty of Communication. \nLikewise\, throughout the rest of the week\, we will have meetings to aware about suicide prevention and World Suicide Prevention Day\, both in the capital and throughout the country\, as well as appearances in media.
