SUMMARY:ESPPA 2026 Symposium: Changing the Narrative on Suicide – Safer Transitions
DESCRIPTION:Join us in a beautiful Wrocław\, Poland or online (only for e-poster viewing session) for the very special WSPD-associated event – inaugural international symposium of the European Suicidology\, Prevention & Postvention Association (ESPPA) – the very first formal Europe-wide\, newly registered association\, bringing together suicidology\, suicide prevention and postvention\, with participation of  IASP SIG Education and Training in Suicide Prevention representative\, as well as Section of Suicidology EPA for strengthening of suicide prevention and postvention in Europe. \nThe ESPPA 2026 Symposium\, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide: Safer Transitions”\, focuses on one of the most critical and insufficiently addressed periods in suicide prevention: the transition from hospital care to outpatient\, community and family support. \nThe first days after discharge from psychiatric hospital require urgent attention. \nDo you even know\, that research has estimated a suicide rate of approximately 2\,950 deaths per 100\,000 person-years during the first week following psychiatric discharge – around 200–300 times the rate observed in the general population? Discharge must therefore be understood not as the end of care\, but as a high-priority transition requiring preparation\, continuity\, rapid follow-up and shared responsibility. \nThe symposium is for clinicians\, researchers\, educators\, students\, hospital representatives\, public-health professionals\, people working in crisis intervention and community services\, decision-makers\, industry representatives and people with lived experience. \nThrough an international workshop\, expert lectures and a multidisciplinary forum\, participants will explore practical approaches to strengthen safety planning skills in an innovative way using serious game concept\, a part of European Union co-funded grant (ELLIPSE Resilience Enhancement) (ID 2025-1-SE01-KA220-HED-000364668). Ensure timely and coordinated follow-up after discharge\, involve patients and supportive family members in safer transitions and translate evidence and international experience into real-world action. \nA distinctive component of the event will be its interactive e-poster programme. Accepted e-posters will remain available electronically and will be brought together in an e-book\, extending the visibility of projects and findings beyond the symposium itself. Where authors provide consent\, participants will also be able to contact them directly to ask questions\, exchange experience and develop new clinical\, educational or research collaborations. DESCRIPTION:This session will focus on suicide assessment as a process shared by school mental health professionals within multidisciplinary teams. Evidence-based tools will be presented to complement clinical interviewing\, as structured assessments improve identification of suicide risk beyond interviews alone (Posner\, 2011). These tools will be integrated within a broader contextual framework to support identification of drivers of suicidal behavior and inform effective prevention efforts across levels of risk. \nSpeakers: \nDr. Marina Niznik\, a licensed psychologist in California\, is the President of Inlight Psychological Services PC\, the private practice she founded specializing with adolescents. She earned her doctoral degree in School Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. DESCRIPTION:Roses in the Ocean hosts an annual event in Brisbane CBD’s Queen Street Mall for World Suicide Prevention Day. The Roses in the Ocean Brisbane team\, along with local service providers\, spend the day having open\, honest conversations around suicide in line with the World Suicide Prevention Day Theme\, Change the Narrative on Suicide. The day provides an opportunity for people to share their own stories\, including contributing to an art display of what they wish people knew about suicide\, and members of the community receive the gift of a rose from the Roses in the Ocean team as a symbolic reminder that they are heard and cared for. Local artist and chalk-drawer\, Mace\, creates a chalk drawing on the theme\, and we are always joined by the incredible Red Tie Band who provide beautiful\, relaxing music throughout the day.

SUMMARY:Change the Narrator: Give the Floor to the Protagonist of the Social Scene
DESCRIPTION:For many years we have acted as translators of the pain suffered by individuals who are silenced by society. However\, no one is better suited to speak of pain than those afflicted by it. Starting from this point\, and after three decades dedicated to caring for people at high risk of suicide\, NEPS – the Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide – concluded that\, to “change the narrative about suicide\,” and therefore produce systemic change\, we should begin by changing the narrator. Proposing\, as the theme of its campaign\, “Changing the narrator: give the floor to the (prot)agonist of the social scene!” This alteration of positions in the discourse would provoke a change in perspective and\, consequently\, a greater probability of transforming society’s and governments’ perception of suicide. \nIn this way\, it is assumed that the words of those who are submerged in extreme psychic suffering will have a greater possibility of reaching people in general and\, in this way\, promoting a deeper reflection on this suffering that has been denied for centuries due to the stigma that has been perpetuated in the consolidated view of these individuals. Hearing about suicide from the voice of those who have decided on death\, and not from their interpreters\, has an infinitely greater chance of awakening in society a more empathetic\, respectful\, and humane perception within society regarding those living this reality. \nIn 2026\, in allusion to World Suicide Prevention Day\, NEPS will hold the Seminar: “We/Knots” “in/of” the Network: Interactions in Care – in mental health and suicide prevention. \n“We/Knots”[1] “of/on” the Network: Interactions in Care – in Mental Health and Suicide Prevention” \n[1] In Brazilian Portuguese\, “Nós” has a double meaning: “we”  and “knot\,” and in the title it alludes to our place in the support network and to the “knots” that prevent the proper functioning of the networks. \nThis event will continue the campaign “Changing the Narrator: with the word\, the (prot)agonist of the social scene” and aims to give voice to those attempting suicide\, caregivers of those attempting suicide\, and survivors bereaved by suicide to recount their experiences in the care networks: RAPS Network (Mental Health) and SUS Network (General Health)\, promoting dialogue with the Mental Health Coordinators of the state and municipality and representatives of institutions that defend civil rights. \nThe event’s main objectives are: to allow NEPS users\, caregivers of users\, and survivors to recount their experiences as users of care networks (networks full of nodes) to mental health coordinators and representatives of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Public Defender’s Office of the state of Bahia\, so that\, based on these accounts\, dialogue can be facilitated. between the parties\, especially by connecting the two extremes of the care networks: management with the end user\, in a situation still shrouded in prejudice\, suicide\, in addition to giving civil rights representatives the opportunity to be close to and listen to those whose rights they represent. \nThe Seminar will feature two roundtables: the 1st composed of suicide attempters who are NEPS users\, the Mental Health Coordinator of the State of Bahia and a representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Bahia; The second panel\, in addition to caregivers of those attempting to conceive who are users of NEPS and bereaved survivors\, will include the participation of the Mental Health Coordinator of the Municipality of Salvador and a representative from the Public Defender’s Office of the State of Bahia. \n– Preceding the 1st Panel: \n“THE AFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN HUMANS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: KNOTS THAT BIND HUMANS TO MACHINES AND UNTIE THEM FROM THE REAL WORLD.”   Soraya Carvalho. \n– Following the 2nd Panel: \n“HOW NEPS UNTIES KNOTS AND TIES BONDS.”  Maira Oliveira. \nClosing: \n“ART(CULA)[1] TIES BONDS AND UNTIES KNOTS”\, \nART Presentations by NEPS users \nConclusion: \nWE WILL CONCLUDE THE EVENT WITH A GATHERING FOR WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY. \n[1] How NEPS articulates art with conventional treatment\, through the users\, we will show the effect of art on the mental health of the users. \nThis Seminar aims to improve listening skills\, strengthen bonds\, and expand the shared responsibility of the care network and public bodies responsible for upholding citizens’ constitutional rights. \nTo this end\, on September 10\, 2026\, we will once again give voice to those who for so many years have had their pain censored\, suffocated\, and silenced. The unique aspect of this year’s proposal is that their voices will be publicized on platforms accessible to the general public. This means that\, beyond the need to speak openly about suicide (as proposed by the Yellow September Campaign)\, we need to listen openly about suicide! \nNow is the time for society and governments to listen to them and include them in discussions\, taking into account what the protagonists of the social scene say about suicide and its prevention\, so that\, together\, we can develop effective actions and public policies that address the needs and desires of those who have chosen death as an escape. This is because we understand that for a suicide prevention policy to be effective\, it is not possible to do so without listening to those for whom the policy will be built. We believe that in this way it is possible to produce a significant reduction in the number of deaths by suicide. \nThis event\, with the testimonies of users and the discussion with representatives of the civil rights will be recorded and made available on YouTube\, with the express and signed authorization of all participants in the event\, especially the users\, whose interest is that their words be broadcast on the networks of the general public and thus reach civil society and government officials. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The II Ibero-American Congress on Suicidology is an international scientific meeting that will take place on 10–11 September 2026 in Barranquilla\, Colombia\, as part of the World Suicide Prevention Month. \nThe congress will bring together researchers\, academics\, clinicians\, mental health professionals\, educators\, policy makers\, community leaders\, and organizations from across Ibero-America to exchange scientific evidence\, innovative practices\, and collaborative strategies for suicide prevention and postvention. \nThe scientific program will include keynote lectures\, oral presentations\, scientific posters\, and interdisciplinary dialogue focused on research\, innovation\, public policy\, protective factors\, community intervention\, and lived experience. \nOrganized by the Ibero-American Network of Suicidology (RIS)\, the congress seeks to strengthen international collaboration and promote evidence-informed actions that transform suffering into hope through science\, education\, and collective commitment.
