SUMMARY:Castlemaine Safe Space World Suicide Prevention Day Gathering and Candle Lighting
DESCRIPTION:The Castlemaine Safe Space\, a non-clinical free drop-in centre staffed by trained local Peer Volunteers\, will be holding a reflection and candle lighting ceremony at the Safe Space in Castlemaine from 7 – 8:30 pm on Wednesday September 10th at 74 Mostyn Street Castlemaine\, Victoria\, Australia. \nPlease come and join us\, or\, if you aren’t able to\, light a candle near a window at 8pm\nto show your support for suicide prevention\, to remember a lost loved one\nand to offer support for people struggling with the grief of suicide loss of a loved one. \nThe theme for this years event is Changing the Narrative on Suicide.  It’s about shifting from a culture of silence and lack of understanding to one of openness\, empathy\, and support. \nChanging the narrative means fostering empathy and compassion for those who are struggling. It means understanding that suicidal thoughts and feelings are a sign of immense pain and- distress\, and that talking about suicidal thoughts does not increase their presence or occurrence. It means listening without judgment\, offering support\, and guiding individuals towards help. \nFor us at the Castlemaine Safe Space\, we listen and provide warmth and support. We ask our guests what’s been happening for them\, and offer empathy stemming from our own lived experience\, something that often can’t happen in a hospital emergency room situation. \nWe recognise that thoughts about suicide are universal and normal. \nWe acknowledge all with a lived experience of suicide – those who have experienced suicidal thoughts\, made an attempt on their life\, cared for loved ones through crisis\, or been bereaved through suicide. \nWe remember those we have lost to suicide and acknowledge that you matter\, you always did\, and you always will. – you have left footprints on our hearts and minds forever. \n

SUMMARY:World Suicide Prevention Day – Candlelight Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we come together in solidarity on World Suicide Prevention Day to light a candle in honor of loved ones lost to suicide\, and to support those in our community who are living with thoughts of suicide.\n\nThis simple and informal gathering is a time for quiet reflection and unity. There will be no speeches or ceremony—just a peaceful moment of silence as we light candles in connection with others around the world.\n Candles will be available\, but feel free to bring your own. Members of the Lebanon County Suicide Prevention Task Force will be present to offer support and lead the lighting. If you cannot attend in person\, we invite you to light a candle in your window at 8:00 PM to remember and reflect.\n\nWorld Suicide Prevention Day is a global reminder that there is always hope\, and that our actions—no matter how small—can help light the way for those who are struggling.\n\nHelp. Hope. Heal. \n\nHosted by the Lebanon County Suicide Prevention Task Force and the Community Health Council of Lebanon County.

SUMMARY:Pubs Supporting People - World Suicide Prevention Day Event at the Aldinga Hotel\, South Australia
DESCRIPTION:In the coastal seaside suburb of Aldinga\, South Australia\, two new concepts in suicide prevention are currently being trialled by caring locals. \nThe GLASS EMPTY Suicide Prevention Signal (www.glassempty.org) is a way for people suffering with suicide distress to get the assistance they need when the words are too hard to say. \nThe simple signal – an upturned glass with a coaster on its base – indicates that one’s glass is empty\, literally and metaphorically. And a conversation can help fill the cup\, so to speak. They can show the signal to those in the pub or offer a GLASS EMPTY coaster to someone in the pub to start the conversation. \nSupporting this initiative is a group of caring community members known as The Aldinga Whisperer Team (www.thewhispererteam.org). When someone presents with emotional distress at the local pub\, the Aldinga Hotel or local brewery\, “The Pub Whisperer”\, that’s an empathetic bartender who is prepared to help\, can assist with a quiet and confidential conversation to get them feeling safe again. \nIf the Pub Whisperer is too busy or unable to help\, they can call on one of the six local community members\, trained with suicide prevention skills\, to come in for a conversation\, and get the person in distress to safety. \nThese two world-first initiatives can be used around the country in pubs\, bars\, cafes\, clubs and breweries and are designed to prevent suicide\, with a community-supported approach to prevention. \nFounder\, Aldinga local Jonathan Hart\, developed the concepts after experiencing suicide distress in 2014. “If it wasn’t for my Dad walking on the beach with me and just listening I might not be here\,” says Mr Hart. “Without his care and concern during the toughest months of my life\, I wouldn’t have made it through. He didn’t fix everything – he stayed close\, reminded me I mattered\, and helped me hold on. That connection made a difference.” \nSeptember is National Suicide Prevention Month\, with World Suicide Prevention Day held on Wednesday\, September 10. \nTo mark the date Jonathan will speak at a Pubs Supporting People event at Aldinga Hotel. Doors open 6pm for a 6.30pm start. He will be joined by Dan Ward from Project HYPE. \nThe public event is encouraging anyone with a mate they care for\, or are concerned about\, to attend.

SUMMARY:(Un)spoken Word poetry group - the gift of hope for suicide prevention
DESCRIPTION:Our friendly and supportive (Un)spoken Word poetry group is bringing the gift of hope to Wolverhampton on World Suicide Prevention Day (10 September 2025) to help reduce stigma and encourage open conversations to prevent suicides. \nThrough poetry and spoken word\, we want to inspire hope in our Black Country communities. Join us to: \n\nhear poems about mental health\, wellbeing\, hope and recovery\nshare your own poetry with others\n\nEveryone is welcome and if you prefer to just listen\, that’s fine too. \nTogether we can change the narrative on suicide. \nThe (Un)spoken Word poetry group was born in 2021 at Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust; the title chosen because talking about mental health\, wellbeing and life can often remain unspoken. Over the past four years it has welcomed many people to online and face-to-face events\, including those who have never written poetry before\, but have left inspired! It has also helped people connect during difficult times in their life. In 2023 we published a volume of poetry from some of our members. \nOn 10 September we welcome new and old friends to join us at the Community Space\, Wolverhampton Train Station\, Wolverhampton WV1 1LE (next to Costa). Local poet David Stocks who is also the Strategic Suicide Prevention Coordinator at Black Country Healthcare will be our host. Bring along your own poems to share or if you’d prefer to just listen\, that’s fine too. You don’t need to be a poet to take part. The warmth of the group through the language of poetry is something special and is open to all. \n\n\n\nLocation\nCommunity Hub\, Wolverhampton Train Station (next to Costa)\, WV1 1LE

Please speak with your IT departments to ensure you have access to the Teams online platform. We ask that teachers log into the sessions and stream the online event via a projector for all students to view as a group. \nPlease do not share the Teams link with students to log in individually using their own devices. \n\nWhat technology do we need?\n\nTo participate in the online event\, you will need access to Microsoft Teams\, a projector and speakers\, to livestream the session. \nYou will also need access to the Teams chatbox via a keyboard to actively engage with the discussions. Should your students also wish to engage verbally with the wider group\, access to a functioning microphone will be necessary. \n\nDo we have to have our cameras on?\n\nWhilst it is not compulsory to have your cameras on\, we encourage that you do where possible\, to support engagement and connection with other groups in the session. This can also support our MHEP consultants to engage with your students and to see what is happening in each classroom. \nWe understand that local school guidelines or internet connections may limit whether your group can have their cameras on. \n\nWhat if the time slots sit between two periods? Can we adjust the time of the online event?\n\nThis online event is being offered to classes across Australia so we are unable to shift the times. We recommend setting up a separate space in the school with staff supervision\, for class groups to attend the online event between lesson times. \n\nHow long will the online event run?\n\nThis online event will run for 1hr 15mins. 60 mins for content and activities and 15 mins at the beginning to ensure everyone can log in and ensure their technology is working. \n\nHow many classes can register from my school?\n\nAny class at your school from Yr 7-12 is welcome to join us for our online event. Your classes are welcome to register separately or together as a whole cohort. As above\, if the time slots don’t fit with your timetable\, we suggest setting up a separate space in the school with staff supervision\, for class groups to attend. \n\nWhat happens if the online event is full?\n\nIf the online event is full\, please register for the waitlist on Eventbrite\, in the event another class cancels their registration. \n\nWhat is my role as a teacher during the online event?\n\nTeachers are required to supervise the students and manage behaviour throughout the session. We also ask that they support the group to engage and actively participate in the event discussions and activities. \nIt is also important for teachers to monitor the wellbeing of students throughout the session and check in on anyone who they feel may have been impacted by the event content. \n\nWhat mental health topics will the online event cover and what if one of our students has recently been impacted by a tragedy or other critical incident?\n\nThis online event will discuss general mental health and ways to manage stress and tough times. We also promote help-seeking and encourage young people to reach out to their families and teachers if they need any support. If you’re aware of a student in your class who may find these discussions upsetting\, please speak with their families and give them the option to opt out. \nIf your school has recently been impacted by a critical incident or suicide death\, please connect with the Be You team in your state or territory for support. Please click here to find contact details for each state and territory. \n\nWhat if my class misses out?\n\nThere are limited spots available for our online event. SUMMARY:Indigenous Knowledge & Life Promotion: Changing Narratives on Suicide Prevention
DESCRIPTION:September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. On this day\, people will gather in communities across Canada and around the world to show support for suicide prevention efforts\, to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have died by suicide\, to comfort those who grieve the loss of a loved one to suicide and to strengthen connections and community together. \nThe Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) is marking this day by hosting a free and live\, virtual event entitled\, Indigenous Knowledge and Life Promotion: Changing Narratives on Suicide\, featuring guest speakers Elder John Rice and Lindsay DuPré. \nJoin Elder John and Lindsay as they share insights into how Indigenous Knowledge can shift perspectives on suicide. Elder John is a third-degree member of the Three Fires Midewiwin Society and Elder/Knowledge Holder at Dnaagdawenmag Binnoojiiyag Child & Family Services. He has an incredible ability to weave and harmonize Traditional Knowledge and Teachings into mainstream work. Grounded in her lived experiences as a Métis scholar\, mom and auntie\, Lindsay will explore how our relationships with Knowledge shape our wellbeing and our sense of community liveability. Her presentation will highlight the rigour of Indigenous Science and its potential for shaping life promotion strategies. \nLife promotion is rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems and cultural teachings\, and shifts the narrative from crisis response to one of hope\, healing and empowerment. At its core\, Life Promotion is about celebrating life. Rather than focusing solely on suicide prevention\, it embraces a “language of life”—a strengths-based approach that emphasizes belonging\, meaning\, purpose and hope. This philosophy aligns with the First Nations Mental Wellness Continuum Framework\, which recognizes that wellness is deeply connected to culture\, land\, spirituality and community. \nFollowing the presentation\, there will be a Q & A and closing segment\, with attendees encouraged to participate in a “Global Candle Vigil” by placing a candle in their window to “Light a Flame of Hope” at 8:00 pm in their respective time zones. \nThis WSPD event will be held on Wednesday\, September 10th\, 12:00-1:30 PM ET and registration is required (link below).
