SUMMARY:NSCSW Lunch & Learn: Depathologizing Suicide
DESCRIPTION:September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day and September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in Canada. \nSuicide is an issue impacting service users and community members throughout Nova Scotia and it disproportionately affects individuals from excluded and oppressed communities. At times\, addressing suicidality in service users and community can seem like a task too big and too risky for social workers and helpers. However\, it is important to understand that everyone can address suicide! At times the biomedical model and institutional silos can create barriers to supporting service users who are affected by suicidality. \nThis session explores the issues of suicidality beyond biomedical concepts and provides social workers and helpers with resources\, language\, and new understandings about suicidality based on emerging research and evidence. Questions explored in this session include: \n\nWhat are the underlying assumptions in suicide intervention and prevention?\n\n\nHow might social workers and helpers move beyond clinical and crisis-based approaches to suicide prevention?\n\n\nHow might social workers and helpers feel less fear and be empowered to address issues of suicide in their practice in clinical\, government\, and community settings?\nWhat are the resources\, frameworks\, and tools that exist to support community-based suicide prevention?\n\nThis session is in partnership with Nova Scotia Health’s community-based suicide prevention initiative\, Roots of Hope.

SUMMARY:Cross Cultural Voices - Changing the Narratives of Suicide
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Mariposa Trials NFP and Charity ABN 48115682804. \nChanging the Narratives of Suicide recognises that real change happens together. By collaborating\, we can build communities that value compassion\, care\, and connection\, promoting hope and meaningful lives. \nCross-cultural voices are an essential part of the solution in addressing health and stigma. Their knowledge and lived experience help tackle risk factors such as loneliness\, isolation\, and distress\, particularly within refugee and migrant communities. Cultural wisdom and community connection offer powerful pathways to healing and recovery. \nThis first-of-its-kind conference in South Australia brings together key figures in health\, research\, service delivery\, community development\, and responses to distress and suicide to inspire conversation\, connection\, and a shared movement for change towards an inclusive and compassionate future. \nPlease Note: This event will be filmed and photographed. If you do not wish to be included in any photos or video recordings\, please email the organizers at projects@mariposatrails.com.au with the subject line: Decline Photos and Filming. \nWe will take the necessary steps to respect your preferences.

SUMMARY:Time Together: A Service Of Reflection For Those Affected By Suicide
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to gather\, united by the effects of suicide\, whether bereaved\, surviving a suicide attempt\, living with suicidal thoughts or know of someone who has. Listen to personal stories\, music and poetry\, creating a contemplative atmosphere.  You are invited to bring a small stone\, a flower or light a candle\, marking your own journey. \nJoin us as we come together for our first celebration in Leicester\, on Saturday\, 13th September at 2pm\, building on the success of a similar event hosted in London for the past 10 years. What we hope will become an annual event here in Leicester\, is a non-denominational service offering a compassionate space for those who are affected in any way by suicide and journeying towards hope and healing. After the service\, we warmly invite you to join us in the Parish Room for tea\, coffee\, and biscuits\, and to chat\, with organisations that are supporting this important event. \n\n\nThe service is organised by Talking Mental Fitness\, with support from Olly’s Future https://ollysfuture.org.uk\, a suicide prevention charity. \nYou are welcome to bring along a stone\, a rose\, or light a votive candle to signify where you are on your personal journey towards hope and healing and will be invited to place these near the Sanctuary at specific times during the service. \nThe audio recording of the 2023 service and the programme of the 2024 service can be found on the Olly’s Future website; http://ollysfuture.org.uk/st-martins-in-the-fields-service \nIf you have any queries about this event or would like to get in touch\, please email Jeremy O’Dwyer\, info@talkingmentalfitness.com
