New IASP SIG Focuses on Social Determinants of Suicide

IASP is pleased to announce the launch of a new Special Interest Group (SIG) on the Social Determinants of Suicide, co-chaired by Dr Lay San Too and Dr Eve Griffin.

Suicide is a complex and multifaceted issue, deeply influenced by a range of social and economic factors including poverty, unemployment, financial stress, low educational attainment, childhood adversity, violence, and social isolation. This new SIG recognises that addressing these underlying determinants is critical to effective and scalable suicide prevention.

This is also a key priority area for IASP, particularly from a policy and advocacy perspective. Tackling the root causes of suicidal distress through early, systemic interventions not only improves outcomes for individuals but also contributes to more sustainable and equitable public health responses globally.

The group aims to bring together individuals with a shared interest or expertise to collaborate on research, policy, and practice. Key objectives include sharing global research, highlighting impactful interventions and policies, promoting interdisciplinary knowledge exchange, and facilitating international collaboration and funding opportunities.

If you are an IASP Member working in this space or have an interest in advancing understanding and action on the social determinants of suicide, we invite you to get involved.
