SIG Focuses on Suicide Prevention in the Criminal Justice Sector

IASP is pleased to announce the launch of a new Special Interest Group (SIG) on Suicide Prevention in the Criminal Justice Sector, co-chaired by Professor Karen Slade, Professor Rohan Borschmann, Dr Bryce Stoliker and Professor Tammi Walker.

Suicide rates in custodial settings are three to ten times higher than in the general population. This disparity is often linked to a complex combination of risk factors, including histories of trauma, mental health issues, substance use disorders, and social challenges.

In response to this critical issue, a new Special Interest Group has been formed to advance suicide prevention and postvention for individuals within the criminal justice system. The group aims to foster a collaborative environment for professionals from academia, practice, and lived experience to share knowledge and promote evidence-based strategies.

This initiative is a key priority for the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), aligning with its broader policy and advocacy goals. By bringing together diverse expertise, the Special Interest Group will work to enhance research, inform policy, and improve practical approaches to reduce suicide risk and support those affected.

If you are a member of IASP working in this space or have an interest in advancing understanding and action on suicide prevention in the criminal justice sector, we invite you to get involved.
