Angela Rintoul is a Principal Research Fellow – Gambling and Suicide, in the Centre for Mental Health and Community Wellbeing at the University of Melbourne. She conducts research at the intersection of public health, the commercial determinants of health, gambling, and suicide prevention. Angela’s research includes leading large studies to explore the relationship between place, social circumstances, and gambling harm. She is building a program of research to improve systems to monitor gambling harms, including suicide. Her research also describes strategies to disrupt the commercial drivers undermining public health, including efforts to prevent suicide and eliminate family violence. Angela seeks to amplify the voices of those who have been harmed by commercial practices, to counter the stigma and shame these practices generate. Angela has a long-standing interest in reducing health inequities, informed by her work for non-government and intergovernmental agencies in South and South East Asia, as well as her experiences working in state and federal government in Australia. Associate Professor Rintoul regularly translates her research findings to the public and policy makers, to support evidence-informed action to protect public health.
