Online Safety: Artificial Intelligence, Social Media and Suicide Prevention
79th World Health Assembly Side Event
Join us in Geneva this May for an important side event during the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79), focusing on artificial intelligence, social media, and suicide prevention. The event will be co-hosted by IASP, Orygen, Safe Online, and Crisis Text Line.
As a non-state actor in official relations with the World Health Organization, our participation in the World Health Assembly is a significant opportunity to advocate for suicide prevention as a public health imperative, and to spotlight it as a cross-cutting issue with implications for health, human rights, and digital governance. Hosting this side event reinforces our commitment to working with governments, civil society, and international partners to ensure suicide prevention remains central to global health agendas, including those shaping the future of AI and online safety.

About the Event
As AI systems and digital platforms increasingly shape how people communicate, seek support, and access information, there is an urgent need to ensure these environments promote safety, transparency, and accountability.
This session will bring together researchers, civil society, and young people to explore how these systems should be designed and governed so that they protect, rather than put at risk, people who are vulnerable.
Join Us
We welcome participation from Member States, UN agencies, global health institutions, civil society organisations, researchers, and digital safety and technology partners.
