Women and Suicidal Behaviour at the 10th World Congress of Women’s Mental Health

The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) will co-host a panel on “Women and Suicidal Behaviour” at the 10th World Congress on Women’s Mental Health in March 2025. Moderated by Shalini Garg (Editor-in-Chief, Lancet Regional Health – South East Asia), the discussion will feature Professor Prabha Chandra (IAWMH President), Dr. Lakshmi Vijayakumar (Founder, SNEHA), Professor Jo Robinson (IASP President, Orygen), and Dr. Louise La Sala (Orygen). IASP is delighted to support this important congress, recognizing the vital role it plays in advancing research and advocacy for women’s mental health globally.

Suicide remains a leading cause of death among women worldwide, yet gender-specific risk factors are often overlooked in prevention strategies. Addressing these issues is crucial to developing more effective interventions and ensuring that support systems are responsive to the unique challenges faced by women and girls.

Professor Jo Robinson will present an overview of IASP’s work and findings from the Task Force on Women and Girls, highlighting trends in suicide and self-harm, along with key risk and protective factors. The discussion will cover perinatal suicide (Prabha Chandra), the impact of intimate partner violence (Lakshmi Vijayakumar), and the role of social media in youth suicide (Louise La Sala).

The session will include a Q&A segment, encouraging audience engagement and discussion. The panel aims to shed light on pressing issues affecting women’s mental health and suicide prevention, contributing to improved policies and interventions worldwide.
