A Global Review of National Suicide Prevention Strategies

IASP has published the 2026 edition of A global review of national suicide prevention strategies, produced as part of the Partnerships for Life Global Initiative. The review brings together, for the first time in a single document, the standalone national and subnational suicide prevention strategies, policies, plans, programmes and legislation identified around the world. It records 109 national documents across 63 countries, organised by WHO region so that each country can be read alongside its regional neighbours. For each country, current instruments are listed first, with any superseded documents noted beneath them, and where strategies exist at the level of a state, province or region these are set out too.

A national strategy sets a shared direction for suicide prevention and provides the leadership and coordination needed to turn commitment into action. Knowing which countries have one in place, and where those commitments are still absent, offers a starting point for advocacy and a clearer view of progress over time. The review shows both how much has been achieved in recent years and how uneven that progress remains across regions and income levels.

Drawing on government publications, official gazettes and, where necessary, established repositories and civil-society sources, the review is intended as a practical reference for policymakers, researchers and advocates working to keep suicide prevention on the public health agenda. It is a living document, to be updated annually and IASP welcomes contributions towards keeping it accurate and complete.

Corrections, additions and notice of new or superseded documents are welcome at globalinitiative@iasp.info.
