International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, also known as Survivors Day, brings together communities around the world to remember and honour the lives of those lost to suicide. It is marked every year on the Saturday before American Thanksgiving, falling on the 18th of November this year.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that more than 700,000 individuals die by suicide each year. Beyond these figures, many more people make suicide attempts or have serious suicidal thoughts. Each suicide or suicide attempt causes a devastating impact on survivors, families, communities, and society, thus affecting millions of people worldwide. This day reminds us of the widespread impact that suicide has on friends, families, and communities and encourages a sense of solidarity and support for those experiencing suicide loss.

Across the USA and beyond, communities mark this event by coming together to organise memorial services, support groups, and other initiatives aimed at fostering open conversations about mental health and suicide prevention. These events provide a safe space for individuals to express their grief and connect with others who have faced similar struggles. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention hosts a platform for people to find an event where survivors of suicide loss can come together.

As survivors, it is important to share stories, offer support, and break down the stigma surrounding suicide. Reaching out and sharing experiences can help give someone hope and change the course of another person’s life. Shared connection and experiences of losing someone to suicide can be helpful for survivors to find a supportive space and navigate their loss.

As the world observes International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, we can collectively promote awareness and understanding and create an environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking help and where communities actively engage in supporting those affected by suicide. This day can also be used by governments, advocacy groups, and organisations to emphasise the importance of suicide prevention initiatives and mental health services.

If you are in a suicidal crisis or supporting someone in a suicidal crisis, support is available. It is also critical that survivors of suicide loss look after their own mental health and well-being and seek support if needed.
